A team of developers and language experts from Afghan Translation Service attended the annual JavaOne Developer Conference, held in San Francisco, California from May 6th to May 9th, 2008.
JavaOne is an annual conference (since 1996) put on by Sun Microsystems to discuss Java technologies, primarily among Java developers. JavaOne is held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California usually between April and June and typically runs from Sunday to Friday. Technical sessions on a variety of topics are held during the day. In the evening, Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions are held at the Moscone Center and surrounding hotels. BOF sessions allow people to focus in on a particular aspect of Java technology. This year's conference theme was Java + YOU and like the years before a huge amount of information in regards to the language and the technology used was presented. Java presents a large opportunity for the localization and language technologists as it is a flexible and portable language. Today it has evolved from simply being a computing language to a multi-industry, multi-system platform that runs on platforms ranging from UNIX, Linux, Windows, and Solaris to set top boxes (STBs), mobile phones, handheld devices, remote sensors, embedded smart cards and a whole range of other platforms. Thanks to the innovators at Sun Microsystems, today the Java industry exists because their invention has changed the direction of computing worldwide.
Afghan Translation Service strongly believes that changing technology means modernization and keeping up with such changes is critical for survival in an IT centric language industry. Afghan Translation Service's technology and IT teams spent the whole week learning and networking with their peers from the industry. This organization has adopted Java among other technologies for both its internal needs and for addressing its clients' requirements. ATS team members attended all the key note sessions, technical and hands-on sessions and the informative BOFs in the evening. Such events are very important not only for learning about the technology and the evolution of Java but also for creating networking contacts to leverage IT resources and cooperate with other organizations.
ATS has regularly attended this conference on an annual basis since 2002 and plans to attend it in the future as well.
